Summary:Chapter 56 examines abnormalities of motor control during sleep that may be manifested in a range of psychiatric disorders, as well as psychiatric symptoms that may be encountered in the major sleeprelated movement disorders. It reviews psychiatric aspects of idiopathic restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movements (PLMs), as well as sleep paralysis and cataplexy. It also discusses parasomnias emerging from both nonrapid eye movement (nonREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, including disorders of arousal, sleeprelated eating, bruxism, and REM sleep behavior disorder. It also reviews the evidence for alterations in motor control during sleep in the dementias, the mood disorders, the anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the substancerelated disorders. Finally, it covers the various ways in which psychoactive drugs can influence motor activity during sleep. Throughout, it offers speculations on the mechanisms of hypnoid motor dysfunction in mental illness.
