| Summary: | This chapter discusses the problems confronting the author after his wife, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, could no longer be cared for in her own home. In this journey without maps, he was faced with the timing of the move, the choice of a care home, the frequency of visits, the relationships with the home manager and staff, the relationships with the other residents and their families, and the need to establish some form of communication with a wife who had undergone profound personality changes and lost the ability to speak. The author considers the adaptations, both emotional and practical, that he found necessary to maintain his inner strength in a world where the abnormal had become the norm. |
