Summary: | Psychiatric patients are unique among patients who present with drug toxicity due to the wide variety of substances that they may have access to. Not only do these medications affect numerous neurologic receptors, they also have significant potential for drug interactions that can lead to morbidity and mortality. Regardless of the toxin causing the presenting ailment, identifying the clinical pattern or toxidrome is the key to guiding therapy for these individuals. This chapter reviews the basic presentations of the anticholinergic, cholinergic, sympathomimetic, and sedativehypnotic toxidromes. Morever, it lists some of the common drugs associated with each pattern. Finally, it presents an evidencebased approach to each treatment. The tricyclic antidepressant and monoamine oxidase inhibitor toxicities are also specifically highlighted. |
