Summary:The National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders has identified the majority of the evidence-based interventions for persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as falling under the rubric of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). However, implementing evidence-based interventions requires that behavior analysts continuously monitor the efficacy of their ongoing interventions and make modifications if a client’s goals are not attained. It is critical that behavior analysts be able to ascertain a client’s progress and make treatment decisions accordingly. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the process known as behavioral assessment, utilized by behavior analysts to objectively evaluate their clients’ progress in ABA treatment, and to outline the use of single-subject methodology for evaluating the efficacy of a particular intervention.
