Summary:The competent clinical psychologist assesses cultural variables and understands behavior to be culturally and contextually driven. In this chapter, the APA’s “Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists” (APA, 2003) provides a foundation for further explanation of multicultural competence in the broad delivery of psychological services. Attention is given to the influence of cultural variables, along with the intersection of other dimensions of identity (e.g., gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion/spiritual orientation, education, and socioeconomic status), on individual and group behavior. The authors identify distinct skills necessary for the development of cultural competence.
