Summary:Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is quite literally the most researched psychotherapy in history with the most empirical support hailing its efficacy. Accordingly, competence in CBT is relevant to our discussion of competence within the application of professional psychology (evidence-based practice and intervention). A comprehensive review of CBT's staggering number of applications and evidence of its efficacy is outside the scope of this chapter; for that, we refer the interested reader to the separate volume in this series on CBT. Instead, we: (a) trace the historical development of this science-based psychotherapy that spanned continents and hemispheres, from the advent of each respective approach to their ultimate merging, (b) introduce several exciting findings on the neuroscience of CBT, and (c) present the nascent developments in the definition and evaluation of competency in CBT.
