Antiferromagnetic order in superconducting UPt[sub 3]: An x-ray magnetic scattering study (invited)

The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic order in superconducting UPt[sub 3] has been measured using x-ray resonance magnetic scattering. The magnetic Bragg intensity at [ital Q]=(1/2,0,2) grows linearly from [ital T][sub [ital N]]=5 K to [ital T][congruent]0.6 K ([ital T][sub [ital C]+]=...

Summary:The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic order in superconducting UPt[sub 3] has been measured using x-ray resonance magnetic scattering. The magnetic Bragg intensity at [ital Q]=(1/2,0,2) grows linearly from [ital T][sub [ital N]]=5 K to [ital T][congruent]0.6 K ([ital T][sub [ital C]+]=0.53 K), where it becomes suppressed with temperature to a reduction of [similar to]6% at [ital T]=180 mK. These results demonstrate a coupling of the superconducting and antiferromagnetic order parameters and are consistent with a suppression in the magnitude of the ordered moments below [ital T][sub [ital c]] when compared with previously obtained neutron-scattering data.
