Synthesis of twin-free, orthorhombic EuBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][partial derivative]] superconductors at 450[degrees]C by direct precipitation from molten NaOH and KOH

Summary:The superconducting, orthorhombic form of RBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][partial derivative]] for R = Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd has been synthesized by direct precipitation from molten NaOH and KOH at 450[degrees]C. In contrast to materials prepared by standard ceramic methods, the products obtained are relatively large, plates with rectangular rather than square faces and are free of the a-b twin boundaries associated with the uptake of oxygen at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transformation. It is notable that these materials do not contain alkali metals. 19 refs., 4 figs.
