Summary: | The purpose of this paper lies in analyzing the permanent exhibitions of Hong Kong History Museum with respect to the identity of the Hong Kong. It is crucial to ask questions why the title of the exhibition had been named as “story”, not “history”. To understand the meaning of the exhibitions, I compares the contents of them with the discourse of literature and TV documentary or drama. The literary works had signified the discourse of modernization based on the urban development of Hong Kong. TV documentary and drama of the mainland China had held the historical view of anti-colonialism based on the national history. The permanent exhibitions, “The Hong Kong Story” take it’s position the mid-point between the discourse of literature and the historical view of documentary. In Hong Kong, the memory of past has been saved and distributed as “stories” through novel, documentary, or drama rather than “history.” With this respect, “The Hong Kong Story” is the matrix of history cluttered by those stories, and the context of exhibitions seesaw between the discourse of literature and the historical view of documentary. The “stories” is split into personal history, episode, and origins of relics. Generally, the split stories are rarely to cultivate collective identity. By contrast, Hong Kong have formed the distinctive identity based on the place Hong Kong. “The Hong Kong Story” intended to form the context stand on the mid-point between the literary and TV documentary. But It is remarkable that the exhibitions had inadvertently or as a result stand on the locality of Hong Kong. The spectacular display of natural environment, the display space divided into pre-modern in basement floor and modern in second floor, the photo of regime change from Japan to England are the evidence.
