Abstract | Objectives: Building on prior research, this study aimed to test the proposition that child’s self-control would longitudinally mediate the link between preschool language ability and externalizing behavior problems in transition to school. Given a general pattern of gender differences previously found on each level of language ability, self-control, and externalizing behaviors, it was expected that the relations among these variables would be stronger in boys than in girls.
Methods: Data (N = 1,102) from 6th, 7th, and 8th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children were used in the separate analyses for boys (n = 569) and girls (n = 533). The analyses were conducted using measures of receptive vocabulary (age 5), self-control (age 6), and overall externalizing behavior problems (age 7).
Results: The results showed that, after controlling for parental education and family income, child’s self-control fully mediated the relation between preschool language ability and first-grade externalizing behaviors for boys only.
Conclusion: The results provided support for the proposed mediation model in which preschool language is linked to later behavior problems via the development of self-control, and extended previous findings by showing that these relations were much stronger in boys. KCI Citation Count: 3 |
