Summary:Phonotactic constraints regulate what sound sequences form possible words in a given language. Probabilistic phonotactic constraints, in particular, refer to systematic but stochastic patterns of sound sequences that are found across words in a language. The current study discusses three major indexes (i.e., Bigram frequency, Chi-square values, and rφ correlation coefficients) that are used in calculating probabilities of biphoneme sequences in phonotactics literature and compares their similarities and differences, using as a case the words found in the Chahar dialect of the Mongolianlanguage. This study shows that the Chi-square values and rφ correlation coefficients are superior to bigram frequency in estimating the types of statistically significant associations of phoneme sequences in the Chahar dialect. Potential phonological research areas that may benefit from the use of the stochastic patterns of the Chahar phoneme sequences are discussed. KCI Citation Count: 1
