劉述先의 ‘理一分殊’ 해석과 그 의의: 현대신유학과 다원주의 사유의 만남

본 논문에서 필자는 현대의 이른바 ‘홍콩대만신유가(港臺新儒家)’ 진영에 속하는 학자인 劉述先(1934-2016)의 철학을 논의한다. 현대신유학 계보에 속하는 학자로서 유술선은 문명이나 종교 간의 소통과 대화라는 과제에 천착하고, 동아시아 전통에서 문화다원주의를 어떻게 수용하고 내면화할 것인지를 모색했다. 이를 위해 그는 특히 주자학의 ‘理一分殊(one principle, many manifestations)’ 개념에 착안했다. 그의 해석에 따르면, ‘分殊’의 원리에 대한 긍정을 통해 다원적 현실을 원만하게 수용할 수 있으며, ‘理一’의 원리의 경우, 극단적 상대주의를 넘어서 다원적 주체 간의 공통된 합의와 규범을 지향할 수 있는 이론적 토대를 제공한다. 특히 그는 카시러의 ‘공능적 통일(functional unity)’ 개념과 칸트의 ‘규제적 원리(regulative principle)’ 개념을 차용하여, 문화철학의 지평에서 ‘分殊’에서 ‘理一’로의 도약이 어떻게 가능하며, 그 도약이 지니는 실질적 의미에 대해 논의했다. 그의 해석을 통해 우리는 다원주의적 각도에서 주자학의 현대적 의미를 살필 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 20세기 현대신유학의 이론적 발전의 한 예시를 확인할 수 있다. This paper aims to investigate the philosophy of Liu Shuxian, who belongs to Neo-Confucian school in HongKong and Taiwan. As a scholar of contemporary Neo-Confucian school, he inquired how the East Asian cultural sphere can embrace cultural pluralism. Liu took notice ‘one principle, many manifestations(Li-yi-fen-shu)’ which is the representative thesis of Zhu Xi. According to him, an affirmation of ‘many manifestations’ is helpful way to accept plural circumstances. Besides, the notion of ‘one principle’ provides a foundation of common accord and norms between plural agents. He discussed the possibility of progress from many manifestations to one principle and its implication in the area of cultural philosophy through borrowing Ernst Cassirer’s the idea of ‘functional unity’ and Immanuel Kant’s the notion of ‘regulative idea’. By exploring the Liu’s view, we can find the modern meaning of the doctrine of Zhu Xi in the sense of pluralism and grasp one theoretical developing way of contemporary neo-Confucianism.
