Sentence Patterns of BEI(被) - Construction in Tang & Song DynastyWith the outset of Tang dynasty BEI-construction began to develop rapidly into various sentence patterns. These sentence patterns deserve a general and systematic investigation, because they reflect the development of BEI-construction itself and the grammatical phenomena related to it. This paper aims to select examples of the diverse patterns of BEI-construction from the twelve texts of Tang and Song dynasties, and to examine how BEI-construction sentence had developed during the two dynasties. BEI-construction in those times can be classified into three categories, [S+BEI+VP] pattern, [S+BEI+N+VP] pattern, and the general BEI- construction. From the three sentence patterns developed 36 subpatterns. These patterns are very similar to the general patterns of BEI-construction in the Modern Chinese that Li, Lin Ding(李臨定) classifies in his 現代漢語句型 (1986). Judging from this similarity, it can be concluded that BEI-construction in Tang and Song dynasties had already made a remarkable advance in terms of sentence patterns. KCI Citation Count: 0
