Summary: | Overview of Chinese Cultural EtymologyThis study examines the field of cultural etymology of Chinese characters, including the meaning and purpose of the field, and its relation to other fields of study. Chinese cultural etymology is a sub-field of Chinese etymology, based on the culture of the Chinese writing system. Chinese culture is studied through the Chinese writing system, and the Chinese writing system is studied through Chinese culture. Chinese cultural etymology is a cross-disciplinary field, the purpose of which is to 1) examine how Chinese characters act as a semiotic and information system, and the inherent cultural meaning therein; and 2) examine the relationship between Chinese culture and characters. The fields most closely related to Chinese cultural etymology are traditional Chinese linguistics, cultural anthropology, and cultural linguistics. Both Chinese cultural etymology and traditional Chinese linguistics share the common goal of researching Chinese character, but differ in their range, purpose, and theory of research. Chinese etymology often gains from results of cultural anthropology, an also provides a new methodology --- to explore cultural phenomena through Chinese characters. Chinese cultural etymology and cultural linguistics both study culture, but the former focuses on the characters, and the later on the Chinese language. KCI Citation Count: 2 |
