Study on the Background of Formation of Wenqi Theory Suggested by Dianlunlunwen Kim, Min-jong The purpose of this thesis is to consider the background of the formation of Wenqi Theory in Dianlunlunwen developed by Cao Pi. The fundamental background of Wenqi Theory is a need for criticizing an authors and their literature works based on the active literature creativity during the Jian'an Period at the end of the Han Dynasty. Cao Pi intended to establish a theoretical foundation for the characteristics of the authors that were expressed in various aspects, and to explain such opinion in Wenqi Theory. Cao Pi intended to reveal that style of the literature works is determined by the 'Qi' of the authors, that is, the characteristic of the vitality in spirit of the authors.Based on this theory, he intended to emphasize the significance of the talents that the authors have in the creation of their literature works. The ways of criticizing persons that prevailed in those period and Cao Pi's awareness that combined the characteristics of the authors with the vitality of the 'Qi' were two main factors that influenced the formation of Wenqi Theory. Wenqi Theory of Cao Pi provided a turning point where the concept of the 'Qi' beyond the domain of philosophy and medical science and began to be considered in the area of literature as well, providing a major significance over the growth in the criticism of the Chinese Literature. Wenqi Theory in Dianlunlunwen was self-awakening with respect to the vitality of the literature, and also a progressive step towards the author criticism. Therefore it may be considered a foundation for the theory on the style in the Chinese criticism of literature. KCI Citation Count: 1
