내 안에서 인생을 배우다 - 선총원(沈從文) 《총원자전 從文自傳》의 창작 의미 연구

이 논문에서는 《총원자전》의 창작 의미를 삶에 대한 진지한 성찰로부터 자신을 새롭게 인식함으로써 창작개성을 가다듬고, 더욱 가치 있는 삶을 추구하기 위한 과정으로 보고 논의를 전개한다. 이 연구를 통해 선총원이 누구보다 ‘인성’과 ‘생명’의 가치를 중시하게 된 발전 맥락과 마지막까지 자신의 생명 가치를 실현하려는 실존의지를 확인할 수 있다. 먼저, 선총원은 창작을 통해 어린 시절 자연과 향촌생활로부터 삶의 지혜를 얻고 심미적 관찰력을 키웠던 자신을 인식할 수 있었다. 또한 그는 과거 트라우마의 기억으로부터 생명과 인성을 중시하는 가치관을 갖게 됐다. 《총원자전》은 이렇게 삶의 경험들을 차례로 반추하는 가운데 현재 자신에서 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 의미화하고 있다. 다음으로, 선총원은 지난날 자신이 겪었던 일상의 느낌들을 익숙하게 묘사함으로써 ‘시골사람’의 창작개성을 정립할 수 있었다. 그리고 인간과 자연이 어우러진 일상 풍경에 대한 세심한 관찰을 통해 자연 속에서 키웠던 감성의 기억을 묘사했다. 그는 산문이 갖는 문체의 자유로움과 기억 속 창작대상의 익숙함을 십분 활용해 자신의 창작개성을 정립하는데 적합한 표현방법을 찾았던 것이다. 마지막으로, 선총원은 어릴 적부터 신기함에 주목하던 적극적인 성격이 향상하고자 하는 열망으로 이어진 발전적 실재를 제시했다. 또한 역경을 딛고 일어나 새로운 세계를 찾아 떠났던 자신을 반추하며, 미래의 자신을 지탱해나갈 강인한 생명력을 상기시켰다. 이로부터 그는 일생동안 주목하고 소중히 여겨왔던 인성, 사랑, 자연, 아름다움 등에 대한 가치 추구를 온갖 역경 속에서도 흔들림 없이 지속할 수 있었던 것이다. In this paper, I will discuss the meaning of the creation of Congwen Autobiography as a process to refine the creative personality and to pursue more valuable life by newly recognizing oneself from the serious reflection on one’s own life. This research attempts to ascertain that Shencongwen emphasizes the value of 'personality' and 'life' and the will to realize the value of life until the end in his writing. First of all, Shencongwen recognizes himself from his childhood who has acquired the wisdom of life ain his aesthetic observation from nature and local life. He also has a sense of value for life and personality from the memory of past trauma. Congwen Autobiography reflects upon his life experience from his early childhood and what it has influenced his later life. Next, Shencongwen establishes the personality of the 'rural person' by familiarizing himself with the everyday feelings he has experienced in the past. He describes the memory of emotions that he has developed in nature through meticulous observation of everyday scenes where man and nature are in harmony. Shencongwen utilizes the freedom of the stylistic prose and the familiarity of objects in memory to find methods of expression suitable for establishing his own individuality. Finally, Shencongwen’s childhood curiosity leads to a strong desire for improvement and presents a positive personality towards reality. In addition, Shen continues to revitalizes himself for the future by remembering his experience against past adversities and difficulties. In so doing, he has been able to pursue values of humanity, love, nature, and beauty, without falling victim to every possible kind of adversities. KCI Citation Count: 0
