Summary:Background/Objective : The purpose of this study was to study the trends of changes of tobacco consumption using the amounts of regional tobacco excision tax among regions of Korea and to examine the influential factors including anti-smoking policy (the legislation of Health Promotion Acts) and the tobacco excision tax increase. Methods : The data base have constructed through collecting the amounts of regional tobacco excision tax and the related data using various secondary data. The influential factors were analyzed by the multiple regression models. Results : The estimated amounts of tobacco consumption showed considerable variation among large cities and provinces (Do) and was highest in Kangwon Province and low in Chonnam and Chonbuk Province, but the amounts converged in the course of year. The effect of the tax increase was uniform but the effect of the legislation and executing of the Health Promotion Act was not remarkable. The variations of estimated amounts of tobacco consumption among small cities and countries were great and the amounts were supposed to be high in military area. On the multiple regression analysis, the regional difference between large cities and provinces and the rate of old population were statistically significant influential factors.
