自然史博物館이냐 自然博物館이냐 - 지질시대 용어를 곁들여서

유럽에서 ‘natural history museum’에서 사용한 ‘history’라는 단어는 글자 그대로 역사를 의미하기보다는‘박물학’ 즉 ‘자연과학의 연구’라는 의미로 원래 사용되었다. 하지만 현대에 ‘natural history museums’가 자연계의 역사를 다룰 뿐 아니라 진화학적 변화를 다룬다는 사실을 생각할 때, natural history museum을 자연사박물관보다 자연박물관으로 번역해야 한다는 주장은 합리적이라고 할 수 없다. 그러므로 익숙하지 않은 자연박물관이라는 새로운 단어를 소개하는 데는 동의할 수 없다. 덧붙여 필자는 Permian과 Triassic periods를 페름기, 트라이아스기 대신 이첩기(二疊紀) 삼첩기(三疊紀)로, 그리고 Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, Pliocene epochs를효신세(曉新世), 시신세(始新世), 점신세(漸新世), 중신세(中新世) 및 선신세(鮮新世) 등으로 각각 번역하여 사용할 것을 제안한다. 이들 용어는 한자문화권에 속하는 동부 아시아 지역 과학자들 사이의 상호 의사소통을 촉진하고 서로 다른 용어를 사용함으로써 발생할 수 있는 불편을 줄일 수 있기 때문이다. Since the most of the natural history museums in these days are dealing with not only the history but also the procedure of the evolutionary change of the natural world, an introduction of a new title, ‘jayeonbakmulkwan’ instead of the existing title, ‘jayeonsabakmulkwan’, seems to be unnecessary.’ In addition, I propose that the names of the geological ages, the Permian, Triassic periods and Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene epochs are to be translated into Icheopgi, Samcheopgi, Hyosinse, Sisinse, Jeomsinse, Jungsinse and Seonsinse. It would be easier to grasp the meaning and much convenient in communicating among the scientists in the East Asia under the Chinese character culture. KCI Citation Count: 0
