전문가적 사용자혁신 및 기업가정신 사례 : 심장판막수술법의 개발과 사업화

본 연구에서는 생산자 중심의 기술혁신에 대한 보완적인 방법론으로서 대두되는 사용자혁신의 과정 및 영향요인을 의료분야에서의 사례를 바탕으로 다루고 있다. 사용자혁신에서 핵심적인 역할을 하는 선도적 사용자(Lead user)가 그 분야의 전문가인 경우 사용자중심의 기술혁신 과정이 어떻게 다르며, 영향을 미치는 요인들이 무엇인지 살펴본다. 국내 의료산업의 경우, 해외의 기술혁신과 사업화 사례들에 비해서 규모나 경쟁력 면에서 미흡한 점이 있고, 개선의 여지가 많다고 판단된다. 이러한 맥락에서 의료산업에서의 기술혁신은 바람직한 사회현상이라고 볼 수 있지만, 제약과 한계도 존재한다. 국내 심장판막수술 분야에서 이루어진 국제적인 기술혁신 사례는 학술적인 의미뿐 아니라, 실무적으로도 가치가 있다 할 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 새로운 기능성을 확보한 의료분야의 기술혁신 사례를 개발자를 중심으로 회고적 심층 사례연구를 수행하였다. 종단적으로 심장판막 수술법과 기기의 기술개발과 사업화 과정을 사례인터뷰와 2차 자료를 바탕으로 조사하였다. 사례는 의료산업에서 새로운 가치창출의 원천으로서 전문가적 사용자혁신의 진행과정을 살펴볼 수 있는 연구대상이면서, 정책적인 함의를 품고 있다고 판단된다. 본 연구는 이러한 사례연구를 통해서 초창기에 있는 선도적인 사용자혁신의 한 유형을 소개하면서, 연구단계-개발단계-확산단계의 3단계 과정모형을 제시하였다. 전문가적 사용자혁신 과정에 작용하는 영향요인을 도출 정리하였고, 의료산업 차원에서 사용자혁신을 촉진하기 위한 제도마련과 관련하여 개선할 점에 대해서 제안하였다. User innovation has strengths in creating brand new functions and approaches compared with manufacture innovation that has more edge on building reliable products. In medical industry, doctors have more knowledge on their surgical procedure so that industry has limited source of innovation. Heart valve surgery case is developed to shed light on the innovation process of user innovation. Based on the previous research on user innovations, a process model of professional user innovation is suggested. So, this research focuses on the process of knowledge accumulation and breakthrough innovation. However, there is another dimension of innovation that stems from diverse interest groups among surgeons and companies that act as impediments in diffusion of innovation. Especially, heart valve surgery is done with mechanical valve that has long history. In medical industry, the adopters of new innovation have path-dependency of expertise and roots of reputation other than functional excellence. Interestingly, the media reveals the controversy after legitimate institutions admits the medical relevance in Europe and end-users or patients adopt the new way of heart valve surgery. The potential impact of professional user innovation is huge, so that there are some policy implications to encourage and effectuate the medical industry. KCI Citation Count: 1
