Summary: | Objectives : The present study investigates depressive mood and suicidal ideation and associated sociodemographic characteristics, to be used as basis data for a suicide prevention service in Anyang. Methods : In 2013, we recruited 1000 Anyang residents aged 20–69 years by using proportional stratified random sampling. Participants completed self-report questionnaires, including Beck’s depression index (BDI), Beck’s scale for suicidal ideation (SSI), and sociodemographic characteristics. The cutoffs for significant depression and suicidal ideation were BDI ≥16 and SSI ≥9, respectively. Results : Clinically significant depression was observed in 11.6% of the participants.
Significant depression was related to being in your 60s, divorced or widowed. It was also associated with low income, low educational level, working in manual labor, temporary employment, and unemployment. Clinically significant suicidal ideation was observed in 6.9% of participants. Divorce was significantly related to suicidal ideation. Conclusion : This study reveals risk factors associated with suicide and depression in the local community. Enforcement of appropriate policy to prevent suicide and depression is needed and can be informed by these results. Additionally, improved awareness of suicide is required. Further investigation using varied methodology is needed to increase our understanding of community mental health KCI Citation Count: 1 |
