현대회화에서 아크릴 젯소 활용에 관한 연구

본 연구는 서양회화(painting)의 한 부분인 지지체에 대한 바탕처리 기법을 목적으로 한다. 바탕처리 기법은 15세기 르네상스 시기에 정립되기 시작하였고 다양한 변화를 통해 발전을 거듭하였다. 이 기법은 회화 표현 매체인 물감을 구조적으로 지탱해주기 위한 중요한 과정으로서 크게 지지체 처리와 바탕칠 처리로 나눌 수 있다. 그러나 이 바탕처리 과정은 회화의 시각적 표현과 의미에 가려져 그 중요성을 인식하지 못하는 경우가 많다. 그러므로 본 연구는 회화의 표현성에 큰 영향을 끼치는 바탕처리 개념에 대해 재인식하고 현대미술에서 효과적으로 적용할 수 있는 젯소 활용 연구를 목적으로 한다. 연구방법은 첸니노 첸니니가 저술한『예술의 서(Il libro Della Arte, 1398)』에 수록된 바탕처리 기법과 시대별 작품에 적용된 다양한 바탕처리 기법을 선행연구로 분석한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 현재 범용적으로 사용하고 있는 바탕처리 재료인 아크릴 젯소(gesso)를 기반으로 표현성에 맞게 변형된 젯소를 실험 연구한다. 실험은 젯소를 기반으로 석고, 볼로냐 석고, 백악을 비율별로 첨가함으로써 변화되는 젯소 간의 결합력과 강도에 따른 물감 흡수 상태를 분석하며, 그것이 현대회화의 표현성으로 연계될 수 있도록 과정을 제시하고자 한다. 이 연구는 표현성의 중심요소인 물감의 재료적 특성과 바탕처리 기법 간의 상호작용에서 나타나는 물질성이 체계적인 바탕처리로 인해 다양한 회화적 표현성으로 연결될 수 있기 위함이다. 그리고 그 응용을 통해 현대회화에 맞는 바탕처리 기법을 모색한다. 본 연구는 미술대학 교육에서 서양회화의 표현성을 고도화하려는 방안으로써 바탕칠 처리기법의 체계적인 실기 교과 과정을 통해 회화의 구성과 기법 체계로 접근할 수 있으며, 한국적 현대회화의 표현성을 위한 중요과정으로 제시할 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to explore the ground preparation techniques for supports, which are a part of Western painting. Ground preparation techniques began to be established during the Renaissance period in the 15th century and have continued to evolve through various changes. This technique is a crucial process that structurally supports the expressive media of painting, such as paint, and can be broadly divided into support preparation and ground coating. However, this ground preparation process is often overlooked due to the visual expressiveness and meaning of the painting itself, leading to a lack of recognition of the importance of ground preparation techniques. Therefore, this study aims to re-recognize the concept of ground preparation, which significantly influences the expressiveness of painting, and to explore the effective application of gesso in contemporary art. The research method involves analyzing the ground preparation techniques recorded in Cennino Cennini's "Il libro Della Arte" (1398) and various ground preparation techniques applied in artworks from different periods as preliminary research. Based on this, the study will experiment with modified gesso, a commonly used ground preparation material, to suit expressiveness. The experiment will analyze the state of paint absorption according to the binding strength and durability of gesso mixed with different proportions of plaster, Bologna plaster, and chalk, and propose a process to link this to the expressiveness of contemporary painting. This study aims to analyze and observe the materiality that emerges from the interaction between the material properties of paint, a central element of expressiveness, and ground preparation techniques through systematic ground preparation to achieve diverse pictorial expressiveness. Furthermore, it will seek ground preparation techniques suitable for contemporary painting through their application. This study proposes a systematic practical curriculum on ground coating techniques as a means to enhance the expressiveness of Western painting in art college education. This approach allows for various methods to be applied to the composition and technique system of painting, and it can be presented as an important process for the expressiveness of Korean contemporary painting.
