가톨릭 광주대교구 퀀셋 성당의 건축적 특성에 관한 연구

본 연구는 광주대교구에 지어진 퀀셋 성당을 대상으로 건축적 특성을 밝히고자 하였으며, 결론은 다음과 같다. 세계 대전 중 신속하게 조립·해체가 쉽도록 고안된 군부대 막사로 쓰인 퀀셋(Quonset) 구조가 담양과 화순, 곡성성당에 사용되었다. 모두 한국전쟁 이후인 1958년에 지어진 것으로 가톨릭 신자의 급격한 증가라는 시대적 배경과 관계 지을 수 있으며, 많은 신자를 수용할 수 있는 유틸리티빌딩 즉, 40피트(폭) x 100피트(길이) 크기의 대형 퀀셋이다. 평면구성은 크게 두 공간으로 구획하여 3/4 정도를 회중석과 제단으로 남겨두고 나머지 1/4 정도인 24~30피트는 제의실이나 고해실로 활용하였다. 단면은 6인치 춤의 리브로 골조를 이룬 20피트 반경의 반원형이며, 그 바깥으로 벽돌을 쌓아 외관을 형성한 특이한 구조로 일반적인 벽돌조 성당과 차이를 갖는다. 퀀셋 성당은 거의 동시대에 지어진 석조와는 다르게 증축이 이루어지지 않았다. 이는 골조를 구성하는 리브와 같은 특수한 자재 수급이 어려울 뿐 아니라, 관련 전문가의 부재를 이유로 들 수 있다. This study sought to reveal the architectural characteristics of Quonset church built in the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and the conclusions are as follows. The Quonset structure, which was used as a military barracks during World War II and was designed to be easily assembled and disassembled quickly, was used in Damyang, Hwasun, and Gokseong churchs. They were all built in 1958, after the Korean War, and can be related to the historical background of the rapid increase in the number of Catholics. They are utility buildings that can accommodate many believers, that is, large quonsets measuring 40 feet (width) x 100 feet (length). The floor plan was largely divided into two spaces, with about 3/4 reserved for the nave and altar, and the remaining 1/4, or 24 to 30 feet, used as a sacristy or confessional. The cross-section is a semicircle with a radius of 20 feet, framed by 6-inch ribs, and its unique structure, in which bricks are stacked on the outside to form the exterior, makes it different from a typical brick church. Unlike other stone churches built around the same time, Quonset church was not expanded. This may be due to the difficulty in supplying special materials such as the ribs that make up the frame, as well as the absence of relevant experts. KCI Citation Count: 0
