Summary:Objectives:The aims of this study were to investigate and compare Direct and Indirect costs for Out-patient of ajor depressive disorder and patients with coronary artery disease in order to provide basic data for health administration in korea. Methods:A group of 51 patients with Major depressive disorder was treated over six months and a group of 23 patients with coronary artery disease also was treated over six months in each department. Direct and indirect costs of health care for both patient groups were compared. Results:The mean total costs per patient during 6 months was more expensive in a group of Major depressive disorder than a group of coronary artery disease:direct and indirect costs were 2.4 times and 2.1 times higher respectively. Conclusion:This study showed that Major depressive disorder requires higher medical costs in similar income. Therefore, it needs more recognition for their indirect costs. This study raises concern over public health for the individuals afflicted, carers and decision makers. KCI Citation Count: 0
