Summary:Objectives:This study was designed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) according to the DSM-IV-TR classification of mood disorders using the brief form of World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument-Korean version. Methods:Fifty patients with MDD were recruited from outpatient clinic and an informed consent was obtained from each of them. Hospital staff members volunteered as the control group. The 26 item WHOQOL-BREF instrument included questionnaires on the physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains and it was employed for testing the all subjects. Results:All of four domains (physical, psychological, social, and environmental) were shown to have a worse QOL life for patients with MDD compared to normal controls. QOL in the patients with MDD was perceived as worsen based on its severity. Patients with MDD had significantly lower QOL scores in every four domains irrespective of age difference. Conclusion:The individual subjective perception of their condition in patients with MDD should be regarded as an important factor. The physical, psychological, social, and environmental status of these patients with MDD needs to be thoroughly thought over. In this context, the WHOQOL-BREF reflects a measurement of a multi-dimensional state of well-being in patients with MDD.
