Summary:Background and Objectives:It has been reported that the onset of bipolar disorder is related to the seasonality, that might be caused by genetic and environmental factors. We aim to elucidate the seasonality of manic episode in Korean bipolar patients, and to demonstrate the difference of seasonality according to clinical variables. Materials and Method:One hundred and twelve subjects who fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for bipolar I disorder were includeed in analysis of this study. The seasonality of first and second manic episode was assessed according to clinical variables, such as age at onset and family history of mood disorder. Results:There was a significant seasonality in the first manic episode (p=0.037), but not in the second episode (p=0.869). The seasonality in the first manic episode was significantly observed in early onset group (p=0.008), but not in late onset (p=0.834). Conclusion:The seasonality of the first manic episode in Korean bipolar patient was observed, especially in early onset group. The results of this study suggest that there might be the relevance between seasonality and age at onset, and implicate the importance of clinical subtype according to seasonality.
