Summary:Objectives : Economic stress is an important cause of suicide in middle-aged adults in Korea. The aim of this study was to assess psychosocial factors affecting suicidal ideation in middle-aged unemployed group. Methods : A total of 117 unemployed people completed a questionnaire which included socio-demographic characteristics and psychiatric scales, such as Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Resilience Scale. All participants were divided into two groups by BSSI ; high suicidal ideation group (n=30, BSSI>≥9) and low suicidal ideation group (n=87, BSSI<9). Results : High suicidal ideation group showed lower-income (χ2=16.264, p=0.02), more psychiatric illness history (χ2=12.288, p=0.001) and higher levels of BDI score (17.1 vs. 7.2, p<0.001). In Resilience Scale, subscale scores such as causal analysis, emotion regulation, life satisfaction, realistic optimism, relatedness and communication competence were significantly lower in high suicidal ideation group. Logistic regression analysis showed that BDI score (β=0.255, p<0.001) and communication competence subscale of Resilience Scale (β=-0.426, p=0.040) were independently associated with suicidal ideation. Conclusion : In this study, poorer communication competence and higher level of depression had significant associations with suicidal ideation. These results suggest that not only reducing depression but also improving of communication competence might have effects on suicidal ideation in unemployed group. KCI Citation Count: 0
