Summary:This study set out to investigate if a computer-mediated English speaking test and affective factors to the test influence speaking performance, compared to a face-to-face interview. The performance on the tests was examined in terms of accuracy, fluency, and complexity because it was assumed that the measures would be useful to investigate more closely where there are any performance changes in these three areas between the tests without any possible biases and limitations of raters and rating scales. The results of the study revealed that (especially, upper-level) examinees performed significantly more fluently in a face-to-face interview than in the computer-mediated speaking test. They hesitated and reformulated sentences more frequently in the computer-mediated speaking test. Unexpectedly, examinees' perceptions of the test formats including nervousness, preparation time, and response time, did not affect their speaking performance on the both tests. KCI Citation Count: 5
