Summary:Males of Drosophila biarmipes produce two different peptides with ovulation stimulating activity in females. One of them, which is derived from the accessory glands and likely to be a homologue of the sex-peptide (SP), is effective in females from all the strains tested. Another peptide seems to be produced in the ejaculatory duct, and its activity varies among the strains of females. This ED-OSS consists of 32 amino acid residues. The C terminal sequence has a striking homology to that of the sex-peptide (SP) of D. melanogaster, while the N terminal sequence is entirely different. Based on the amino acid sequence, we could determine the cDNA sequence for ED-OSS, followed by the determination of the genomic DNA sequence. Both the ED-OSS and SP genes were found to have an intron at the same position. In situ hybridization experiments confirmed that the mRNA for ED-OSS is localized in the ejaculatory duct.
