언더우드와 「그리스도신문」: 신문 발행의 취지와 성격

미국 북장로교 파송 선교사 언더우드(Horace Grant Underwood, 1859-1916)가 발행한 「그리스도신문」에 대한 연구이다. 그의 신문의 기사 내용을 분석해 보면 아주 흥미로운 점이 두드러진다. 신문 발행의 취지와 성격을 보면 나라와 백성을 위해 신문 창간의 필요성을 역설하고 신문이 백성의 계몽에 필요한 일임을 말하고 있다. 그리고 언더우드는 신문이 지식을 얻는 하나의 수단이 되며 문명 진보에 유익하다고 보았다. 이 신문이 당시 다른 신문과 내용상 특이한 것은 신문 기사에서 의 ‘농사와 기계의 지식’을 다루고 있는 점이다. 그리고 「그리스도신문」의 또 다른 성격으로 학교 설립을 통하여 교육의 중요성을 말하고 있는데 주목할 것은 여성교육을 강조하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 개화기 교회의 역할에서 신문이 여성 평등의 가치를 말하는 혁신적인 내용을 다루고 있다는 점이 특별하다. 이러한 면에서 보면 언더우드의 신문은 선교사가 발행한 신문이지만, 신문의 취지와 성격을 통해서 보면 「그리스도신문」이 한국 근대화의 계몽과 교육에 크게 기여한 면을 알 수 있다. This is a study on 「The Christian News」 published by Horace Grant Underwood, a missionary dispatched to the North Presbyterian Church in the United States. Looking at the purpose and nature of the publication of newspapers, it emphasizes the necessity of establishing a newspaper for the sake of the country and the Chosun people, and says that newspapers are necessary for the enlightenment of the people. What makes this newspaper unique from other newspapers at the time is that it deals with 'knowledge of agriculture and machinery' in newspaper articles. Another characteristic of 「The Christian News」 is that it emphasizes the importance of education through the establishment of schools. This is special in that the newspaper deals with new innovative and content that speaks to the value of women's equality. It can be seen that the 「The Christian News」 has greatly contributed to the enlightenment and education of Korea's modernization.
