Summary:Congenital stenosis of the esophagus is a rare form of esophageal stenosis in adults. The main causes of congenital esophageal stenosis are the esophageal web, esophageal stricture due to tracheobroncheal remnants, and idiopathic esophageal muscular hypertrophy. Recently we have experienced a cose of congenital esophageal stenosis due to tracheobronchial remnants in a 39- year-old male patient. The esophagogram shows a characteristic finding, being the linear collection of barium projecting horizontally from the area of the stricture, showing the respiratory epithelial ducts. The endoscopic finding of the stenosis area shows normal mucosa with several small whitish and glistening ovalshaped dimpled lesions. It was treater1 by surgical excision of the stenotic segment, then esophagogastrostomy with cardioplasty was performed for the purpose of preventing gastroesophageal reflux. Microscopic findings are normal esophageal stratified squamous epithelium and abnormal brush-bordered pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium of the respiratory tract.
