Summary:The historical context of the myth surrounding Leoš Janáček as a solitary artist is a direct corollary to the musical reality in Bohemia and Moravia at that time, as specifically referenced in Janáček's fifth opera, Výlety páně Broučkovy (The Excursions of Mr. Beetle), premiered in Prague in 1920. The article examines the extent to which the first part of Výlety páně Broučkovy is a direct commentary on Janacek's critique of contemporary protagonists in Prague, and discusses his aesthetics and the idea of "speech melody" as they relate to their largely unspoken roots in Czech music history from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century.
