Summary: | ZOLTÁN KODÁLY, a professor at the Academy of Music in Budapest, was a colleague of Béla Bartók in the long project of collecting the folk songs of their native land in the form in which these songs were known to and sung by the people. His learning is vast, perhaps especially in the music of Palestrina’s time, and this fact is doubtless responsible for the relatively slight volume of his compositions. A certain self-diffidence toward his own work — noted with regret by his pupils — has also prevented the acquisition of a distinctive style such as a composer of firmer convictions |
