Summary: | In the early 1980s, Guatemalan immigrants started arriving in Houston in sizeable numbers as part of a large Central American influx mainly from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The best-organized immigration stream of Guatemalans arriving in the city consisted of Maya from the western highlands of Guatemala. In this chapter, we primarily focus on one group of Mayan migrants, the sancristobalenses, who migrated from the municipio of San Cristóbal Totonicapán in the western highlands of Guatemala.¹
