Summary: | The city of Natchez, Mississippi, traces its founding to 1716, when Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville completed construction of the first Fort Rosalie. Although settlers had actually arrived in the Natchez area 12 years earlier, it seems fitting that the history of the city is permanently intertwined with the fort that stood on its bluffs for so many years. While the location of the fort is thus celebrated as a symbol of the city, the actual history behind the fort is a complicated one, marked by conflict between the Natchez Indians and the French colonists living among them.
