Summary:The historical site of al-Ḥīra is located to the south of al-Najaf and al-Kūfa in south-central Iraq. Founded in the 3rd century, the city met its heyday in the 5th and 6th centuries, when it became the capital of the Lakhmid-rulers, an Arab power sponsored by the Sasanid Persians (Rothstein 1899; Fisher 2011; Toral-Niehoff 2014). Al-Ḥīra was taken by the troops of the Muslim general Khālid ibn al-Walīd in 633. In 639, the garrison town of al-Kūfa was founded nearby (Musil 1928, 283–295; EI 2, V, 345, H. Djaiet, s. v. Kufa.).
