Summary: | The historical site of al-Ḥīra is located to the south of al-Najaf and al-Kūfa in south-central Iraq. Founded in the 3rd century, the city met its heyday in the 5th and 6th centuries, when it became the capital of the Lakhmid-rulers, an Arab power sponsored by the Sasanid Persians (Rothstein 1899; Fisher 2011; Toral-Niehoff 2014).
