Summary: | The past century has been one of unprecedented change in terms of impact on the urban environment. Globalisation, rapid unrestrained development, demographic changes and economic pressures are the main factors driving change in the urban environment.¹ In 2007, for the first time in history, the global urban population exceeded the global rural population.² The world population has remained predominantly urban ever since. In 2014, Europe ranked the third most urbanised region of the world, with 73 per cent of its population living in urban areas.³
