Summary:α-Hydroxy-ω-carboxy poly (methyl methacrylate) was prepared by anionic polymerization. The initiatnr was formed by the reaction between n-butyllithium and 1, 1-diphenylethylene derivative having protected hydroxyl group. This reaction was followed by termination with carbon dioxide and then deprotection. The resultant polymer was characterized by osmometry, GPC, 1H NMR, and potentiometric titration. It was found to be pure and to have a fairly narrow molecular weight distribution. The protection ability of tert-butyl group in anionic polymerization was found to be as high as that of tert-butyldimethylsilyl group and much higher than that of trimethylsilyl group.
