Summary: | First-generation students, students from negatively stereotyped groups, and students who grew up in economic insecurity often feel like they don't belong in college and that their input is not needed or even noticed. Values-affirmation interventions, although often lasting for only half an hour or so, have resulted in increased grades in a semester, higher retention to the next semester, and positive feelings of health and well-being up to three years later. In light of the values-affirmation exercises and thinking back to the discussion of disidentification with academics, the people can now effectively use these concepts to support students in taking on academic success as part of their self-concept. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) at the University of Central Oklahoma is a small space on the main floor of the university center that houses three staff members and a couple of student workers. |
