Summary:Stating one's values is a way of describing what is important in life. Stating an organisation's values is a way of helping employees know what behaviours are expected and what principles underlie the policies and actions of the company. One of the best stories about values in an arts organisation can be found in R. Hewison, J. Holden and S. Jones' story about a change of leadership at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Another problem with values is that words get overused and every organisation wants to be "service-oriented" or "respectful" or "honest". Values provide meaning to people inside the organisation and they also have to make sense and be felt by people outside the organisation. For example, Melbourne Theatre Company value of "family" also described the relationship between the company and its donors and subscribers.
