Summary:Studies have shown that SF/sub 6/-N/sub 2/ gas mixture is a viable alternative to SF/sub 6/ gas for high voltage applications. However, the performance of spacers in gas mixture needs complete evaluation for a better understanding of the long term performance of GIS. This study aims at evaluation of cycloaliphatic resin spacers for applications in SF/sub 6/-N/sub 2/ gas mixtures. Surface flashover across cycloaliphatic resin spacers has been determined under AC, DC, and combined AC-DC voltages and with fixed metallic particles in SF/sub 6/, N/sub 2/ and SF/sub 6/-N/sub 2/ gas mixtures of different proportions. The results show that cycloaliphatic resin cast spacers are good for gas mixture applications but the filler content is required to be altered for achieving better performance under DC and repetitive pulses.
