Summary:The Al 2 O 3 ceramics with high flashover voltage were prepared by powder metallurgic method. The surface voltage-withstanding performance of Cr and Mn doped Al 2 O 3 ceramic was improved obviously with the addition of small amount of MgO. The crystalline phases were identified by XRD and the microstructures were observed by SEM, the results showed that the addition of MgO could inhibit the grain growth and promote the sintering of Al 2 O 3 ceramic. When 0.5 wt.% MgO was added, the Cr and Mn doped Al 2 O 3 ceramics had homogeneous microstructure and the vacuum hold-off voltage reached to 24 kV, which was 20 % higher than that without MgO.
