32/spl times/10 Gbit/s transmission over 8000 km using hybrid Raman-erbium doped fiber optical amplifiers

A 32/spl times/10 Gbit/s transmission experiment over 8000 km has been carried out using hybrid optical amplifiers composed of Raman and erbium doped fiber amplifiers. Active gain equalization based on amplification has been also demonstrated.
