Uniform remanent state noise and its relation to microstructure

The noise generated in a magnetic tape or disc is closely related to the magnetic microstructure. Even when the medium is in a uniform remanent state, as the head passes over the surface, fluctuations in the stray field from local non-uniformities in the magnetic state will be observed as noise. Summary:The noise generated in a magnetic tape or disc is closely related to the magnetic microstructure. Even when the medium is in a uniform remanent state, as the head passes over the surface, fluctuations in the stray field from local non-uniformities in the magnetic state will be observed as noise. Furthermore, it would be expected that the different microstructures associated with particulate and thin film media will result in different noise characteristics and that noise from media of the same type will be indicative of subtle differences between their microstructures. In order to examine the effects of microstructure on noise, we have examined the noise associated with the remanent states of a number of media, both commercial and experimental systems which included particulate and thin film types.
