Summary: | A novel high pressure sodium lamp (HPS) electronic ballast topology with high power factor (HPF) is presented. Instead of using a power factor correction (PFC) stage, an ac chopper is capable of achieving a HPF and of supplying high frequency current to the lamp. Due to its output characteristic the lamp current presents a low frequency modulation at the voltage source frequency and the consequences of this operation are discussed. Afterwards, different converter topologies, bi-directional switches and modulation strategies for the ac-ac converter are presented. Finally, experimental results of a prototype for 250 W HPS lamps are discussed |
