Summary:This paper summarizes results of studies of the Bulk Power System (BPS) resilience against extreme weather, focusing on hurricanes which cause largest, longest, and most impactful events on North American transmission system. We analyze detailed weather data and their relationship to frequency of forced transmission outages and transmission unavailability in Florida, a region greatly affected by hurricanes. Finally, we show how the industry's ongoing hardening efforts have resulted in a stronger ability to withstand and a faster recovery after hurricanes and large storms over the most recent 8 years.
