Efficient gas lasers pumped by diffuse discharges, initiated by runaway electrons

New method for pumping gas lasers based on diffuse discharges formed in gaps with a inhomogeneous electric field was proposed and realized. Efficient lasing in spectral ranges from IR to VUV under excitation by diffuse discharge was obtained in different active gas mixtures at pressure up to 10 atm.
