Summary:Road safety is a major concern, in which technologies can help provide solutions. In this paper, a road safety information exchange and traffic control system were developed based on data-driven technologies and wireless communications with focus on two road safety use cases: Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) prioritization and over speeding. An intelligent traffic controller equipped with a Variable Message Signboard (VMS) and Wireless Access Point (WAP) for communication of road safety messages, and an On-Board Unit (OBU) mounted on a vehicle, were developed, and applied to the two use cases. It was found that the system can communicate safety messages related to over speeding and ERV prioritization to motorists using the MQTT protocol over Wi-Fi and using a VMS for visual communication. Aside from road safety, the system can use road information to actuate traffic control.
