Summary:In this paper, a diagnosis method for open-circuit fault based on parallel operation structure is proposed for cascaded full-bridge neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter with carrier phase shifting SPWM (CPS-SPWM), which has small calculation and short diagnosis time. Multiple faulty devices with open-circuit in different submodules can be diagnosed independently. The variation rules of capacitor voltage are analyzed under the normal and faulty condition. On this basis, the fault is detected quickly through the voltage deviation, and the scope of fault diagnosis is reduced to two IGBTs. Then, the faulty IGBT is located by comparing the calculated deviation and actual capacitor voltage. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on the thirteen-level experimental prototype.
