Summary:Particle charging by exposure to ultraviolet rays is being investigated. The UV rays cause the emission of photo-electrons from the particle surface, resulting in positively charged particles. The characteristics of the time increase of charging as well as the saturation charge are measured experimentally, using 0.5 - 2.7 μm diameter DOP (Dioctyl phtalate) and incense smoke particles. The experimental results indicate that particle charging by UV-ray exposure is strongly affected not only by the intensity of the UV-ray and particle diameter, but also the material of particle.
