Summary:The issues facing the planet are overwhelming. The average person can contribute by changing personal activities, but the task is so large, the magnitude of change required so immense, that many of the tasks must be accomplished through large foundations, countries, and companies. The huge costs associated with the needed changes produce major political conflicts. Moreover, many powerful individuals and institutions with enormous influence feel that change will hurt their interests. All of these factors make many governments hesitate to move forward. Here is where citizen involvement is absolutely essential, for votes are what keep politicians in power, and sales are essential for businesses, so massive public opinion can have a powerful impact.
